Class for Teams – Recordings

Capture a live class by recording it. Only the active speaker and shared screens are recorded. The classroom tab/gallery is not recorded.

The recording takes time to process. Please allow twice the time of the recording for processing. Recordings will also pause when breakout rooms are started. Instructors will receive a prompt to resume recording when breakout rooms are closed.

Start recording

  1. Select the More button along the top of the Class screen.
  2. Select Record. A dialog open that tells you what will be recorded.
    • Audio and video of everyone in the class
    • Privacy mode is not available during recording
    • Whiteboard is not recorded
  3. Select Start recording.

How do I know if the recording is on?

When the recording starts you’ll see an alert that tells you the recording has started. You can also tell a recording is active by the red recording icon in the top left corner of the Class screen. If you see the recording in progress icon, the recording is on.

What is being recorded?

The following content is being recorded:

  • Screen share
  • Webcams (Students and Instructors)
  • List of participant names and their role (Students, Instructors, Guests, other roles)
  • Audio (microphones)
  • Chat messages
    • all public chats are recorded
    • private chats are visible only to the participants of the private chats (e.g if student1 and student2 have a private chat only student 1 and student 2 will see the private chat messages from the recording). Instructors cannot view the private chats of students.
  • Content tabs (All content in tabs can be viewed in a recording).
    • Collaborate tools (Files, Videos, Websites)
    • Share Screen

A note about Whiteboards/Presentations

Currently, recordings current do not capture footage from the Whiteboard or Presentation tools under Collaborate.  This is a feature that may be addressed in a future iteration of Class for Teams.

Stop recording

  1. Select the More button along the top of the class screen.
  2. Select Stop Recording. Confirm you want to stop the recording.

Once you are finished recording please allow a minimum of twice the time you’ve spent recording (eg. if you’ve recorded a 1 hour session then allow 2 hours ) to finish processing.

You can click Start Playback under the Actions column to view the recording (Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge only) or click on to enable further options

Clicking Edit will allow you to change the default name of your recording as well as configure who has access to view your recorded Class Session. Please note that changing who has access to view your recording will only affect the shared link to the recording.

  • Instructors, assistants and students – Instructors, students, TA’s & staff such as Program Assistants can view the recording. They must access this from inside their learning hub course the learning hub
  • Instructors and assistants – Only Instructors can view the recording. This option’s name is misleading because students, TAs and staff cannot view the recording if this option is selected

Please note your recording link must be set to public to allow users from outside the Learning Hub to view recordings. Please always check with participants before sharing links outside your Learning Hub course.

Additional features that are present on the start playback function (like Chat playback) will be stripped out from the footage.

However this will not give you detailed information such as who viewed the recording and whether this was done inside or outside the Learning Hub.

Click on this will permanently delete your Class Session’s recording. WARNING this process is irreversible we cannot guarantee that any deleted recordings can be restored

Limitations around sharing Class recordings

Class was designed around a synchronous teaching model for online learning, as such trying to share Class recordings outside of its Learning Hub course is generally not recommended if it can be avoided.

It is not possible to roll over recordings from a Class instance in a Learning Hub course into the Class instance of another Learning Hub course. This is because Class is an external learning tool and not a native Learning Hub tool. Because of this, Class itself does not have an import function for recordings built into it nor does it know how to identify which Class instance belongs to which Learning Hub course.

The second but more concerning issue is with regards to downloads and shared (public) links. Class recordings carry several aspects of personal identifiable information that can be used to identify students when sharing this outside of its Learning Hub class of origin. Although you can share the recording of your Class elsewhere, please be aware you may in fact be violating student’s right to privacy in doing so. Please always ensure you have consent from your participants before sharing your Class recordings via link or downloads outside the Learning Hub.
