Best Practices
For best practices using surveys, click the link below. You can also reference the comparison chart for quizzes, surveys and self-assessments to determine when to use each one. Note: Surveys and self-assessments can not be graded/scored. Instructors cannot see the results of a student self-assessment.
- Use surveys to determine students’ rationale for taking a course, their preparation, learning styles, and content delivery preferences. See survey examples.
- Survey students before, during and after a course to gage their learning, provide feedback, and address issues.
- Include a written response question at the bottom of your survey to solicit feedback.
- Unlike quizzes, survey questions do not have to have right or wrong answers and Likert-style rating questions are possible. As such, surveys are not assessed.
- To share questions between Self-Assessments, Quizzes, and Surveys, add questions to the Question Library.
- Create both types of reports (aggregate and individual reports) to compare data.
- Disable multiple attempts if you create a summary report b/c all attempts are aggregated e.g. 2 respondents – respondent one has 5 attempts; respondent two has 1 attempt; 6 attempts are aggregated on the summary report
- When creating a survey report, select all applicable roles that can view it e.g. instructor, Helpdesk
- Questions that have been added to a survey that has been completed and submitted will not appear when the quiz is edited by the respondent (“single attempt that is editable” option). However, if the survey setting is changed to unlimited attempts and the survey is re-attempted by students, the additional questions will appear on a subsequent attempt. Note: Reports will include the latest attempt.
