Browser Compatibility Issues with the Learning Hub
Brightspace’s minimum for supported browser versions increases every January and July. The January update increases the minimum supported browser versions to:
- The minimum supported browser versions to: Chrome 129, Edge 129, Safari 18, Firefox 130
- The minimum legacy browsers are now: Chrome 94, Edge 94, Safari 15, Firefox 92
- The following browsers are no longer supported: Chrome 67, Edge 80, Safari 12, Firefox 67
Operating systems impacted: Windows, MacOS, Chrome OS, iOS and Android
D2L Brightspace displays this warning when it detects you’re using a web browser that has fallen a few versions behind. Please update your web browser
If you continue on, and use D2L Brightspace through an older or unsupported browser, you may experience problems navigating the system or completing work. If you receive a message, such as in the below image, your browser version is out-of-date. Depending on your device and operating system, you may be able to update/change your browser to a compatible version.
Note: All versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy (launched July 2015 in Windows 10) are incompatible.
If your device’s operating system has been updated and it cannot support one of the modern browser versions above, then your device may no longer be compatible with the Learning Hub. Outdated browsers are blocked and not supported in the Learning Hub due to security vulnerabilities, major performance issues, or extremely low usage. For more information, visit Browser Support.
Retro and Legacy Browser
You can access Brightspace with retro or legacy browsers (i.e., specific older versions of supported browsers); however, D2L does not test Brightspace against these older versions. This means you may encounter unexpected user interface behavior and appearance, or broken and unsupported functionality.
In most cases, D2L does not provide technical support or fix software defects experienced in retro and legacy browsers.
When there is an announcement that a browser version is becoming retro or legacy, a feature appears in the Brightspace Platform release notes to notify users about the scheduled changes.
If you attempt to connect to a Brightspace instance with an unsupported browser, Brightspace’s browser version check displays a retro or legacy browser warning message.
"Your browser is looking a little retro"
Using a browser below the latest update’s threshold prompts the message “Your browser is looking a little retro”. The browsers include:
- Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
- macOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
- Android Chrome 107+ (released October 2022)
- iOS Safari 16+ (released September 2022)
- Firefox 106+ (released October 2022)
"Unsupported Browser"
If you use a Legacy Browser, you may have difficulty accessing parts of Brightspace if your browser is not up to date. This prompts the message “Unsupported Browser” when logging in. Browsers older than these receive legacy messaging:
- Chrome 74 (released April 2019)
- macOS Safari 13 (released September 2019)
- Firefox 67 (released May 2019)
- Chrome OS Chrome 74 (released April 2019)
- iOS Safari 13 (released September 2019)
- Android Chrome 74 (released April 2019)
