Copy content from a template to a course when the template is not associated to the course
The process to copy content from a template to a course (that is not a child of the template), sandbox or another template, is different from a course to a course. The below steps explain the process as it pertains to quiz content but the general process can be used to copy other types of course content i.e. instead of selecting quiz content in “export course archive”, you could select another type of content.
Step 1: Export a course archive while on the template site
- Go to the template site.
- From the navigation bar in your course, select Edit course > click Copy/Export/Import.
- Select Export Course Archive. (A template is associated with its children courses, not other courses, so template content needs to be exported via the “export course archive” option.)
- Click Next.
- Checkmark the question library (b/c of question pools; best practice is to always copy the library).
- Checkmark Quizzes.
- Click Continue.
- Do not checkmark “include course files” b/c it copies all content in the “manage files” area. There is no option to copy individual content in “manage files” with an “Export Course Archive”. Note: Left unchecked, you will need to manually copy all the folders and files in “manage files” that are associated with the content you are exporting e.g. quiz question images, HTML documents, PDFs, Word documents. This is explained in overall step 4 near the end of this tutorial.
- Click Export > Done
- Wait and then refresh your page periodically. A small dot will appear beside the update alerts bell when the task is completed as shown below.
- Click the bell and then the notification.
- Click Download the Export Package.
- Save the export file.
Step 2: Import a course archive while on the receiving site
- Go to the receiving course to import the package to.
- From the course navigation bar, click Edit Course > Copy/Export/Import.
- Select Import Course Material > select From a File.
- Import all components.
- Wait for confirmation of upload, conversion, and import as indicated by three green circles.
- Read the import message to ensure content imported successfully. View the log if necessary.
- Click View Content.
Step 3: Preview the quiz on the receiving site and check if the quiz has images
- Click Activities > Quizzes
- Click the caret (^) beside the quiz name and then click Preview from the context menu.
- Check whether any questions with images are displaying the images.
Step 4: If a quiz has images, go to the template site and copy the applicable folders and files to the receiving site
- If a quiz has images, go to the original quiz on the template site, click the quiz, click Add/Edit Questions, click the applicable question, and locate the name of the image directory (click the image, expand the window, click the source code icon, </>, and read the image path) in Manage Files.
- From the root directory of Manage Files on the template site (click Edit Course on the NavBar > Manage Files), checkmark the applicable image folders and images. Note: In some cases, the applicable folders and files may not be in the root but in a subfolder.
- Scroll to the top of the Manage Files window and click the download icon
to zip the folders and images.
- Wait for a zip package to be created. Then download the zip.
- Go to the receiving site Manage Files area and the applicable spot to upload your content e.g. root directory or applicable receiving folder. Note: Folder and file names and paths must match the source template “manage files” area for the content to be displayed correctly on the receiving site.
- Upload the zip to the Manage Files area of the receiving site (click Upload at the top of the Manage Files area).
- Unzip the package (click the caret beside the zip file and click Unzip).
- Wait for it to unzip. Refresh your page periodically. The subscription alerts icon will display a red dot beside it when the task is completed. See image in step 9 below.
- View the unzip notification by clicking the subscription alerts icon below and then the message.
- Take note of the unzipped content in “manage files”.
- Preview the quiz (Activities > Quizzes > select the dropdown beside the quiz > Preview) on the receiving site to ensure the images are displaying for each applicable question.
- Repeat steps 1 – 11 for each quiz where images are not appearing for questions.
- Optionally, and to save space, you may want to delete the zip file in Manage Files on the receiving site when finished.
