Kaltura – How to update old videos to use the latest player
Kaltura is continuously working to update their tools to ensure a quality user experience for your online course videos. One of these changes has come in the form of the New Kaltura Media Player (ver. 7) which has several new updates described in the video below:
You might have noticed that your My Media repository and its tools have started using this player to preview your videos. Additionally any videos that you might have published or imported into a course Media Gallery have also automatically been updated to use this player.
However videos which have been published into your courses using either Add Kaltura Media or the Insert stuff tool will have to be updated manually. Luckily updating your players to the latest version is a relatively simple procedure.
Updating videos published using Add Kaltura Media
- Go into your Learning Hub Course and click Content
- Click into your course module
- Click on the ‘Add Existing Activities’ Button
- Select ‘Add Kaltura Media’
- Select either the My Media, Media Gallery or the Playlists tab
- Select the video you want to embed and click on the gear icon (settings)
- Locate the Choose Player tab
- Switch this from Legacy Player to Version 7 Player
- Click on </> Embed
- That’s it! You should now see a new video item inside your module. Clicking this will reveal your video which now has the new player enabled. You can optionally delete the video using the legacy player from your module
Updating videos published using D2L Insert Stuff
- Go to your News Item, Activity or other tool where you have your old video published
- At the top of the editable description field look for the insert stuff symbol
- Click on the symbol and click Add Kaltura Media
- Select the appropriate tab – My Media, Media Gallery or Playlists
- Select the video you want to embed and click on the gear icon (settings)
- Locate the Choose Player tab
- Switch this from Legacy Player to Version 7 Player
- Click on </> Embed
- Delete the copy of the video using the old legacy player.
- That’s it.
Updating Kaltura video Quizzes
- Go into your Learning Hub Course and click Content
- Go into your course module where the Kaltura Quiz video using the old player is
- Click into the video and locate the assessment box
- Click on the Grade Item, switch this to ‘No grade‘ and click Save. Please note that this action is not deleting the grade item but dissociating it from the Kaltura Quiz. The grade item itself will remains intact inside the Grades tool and we will re-associating it as you will see down below.
- Go into your course module again and click on the ‘Add Existing Activities’ Button
- Select ‘Add Kaltura Media’
- Select the My Media tab
- Select your quiz and click on </> Embed. All newly embedded quizzes are configured to automatically use the new player
- Click into the Kaltura quiz and locate the assessment box
- Re-associate the grade item that was previously being used by the old video to the new video
- Delete the copy of the video using the old player and that’s it! You are good to go.
We recommend making these updates prior to the Fall 2026 Term
In order to facilitate ongoing updates and address cybersecurity concerns we are recommending that all Kaltura videos which have been published using all of these methods be manually updated to use the latest player by Fall 2026 term. Failure to do so may result in unexpected behaviour and Kaltura will longer be offering support for videos using legacy players (ver.2)
