Class for Teams – Breakout Rooms

Instructors and assistants can create, open, close, and manage participants in breakout rooms. Class for Teams supports a maximum of 20 simultaneous breakout rooms. If you are recording your Class session, the recording will be paused when you start breakout rooms. Instructors will receive a prompt to resume recording when breakout rooms are closed.

Creating Breakout Rooms

  1. Select Breakouts.
  2. Choose to Assign automatically or Assign manually.
  3. Optionally, update the Number of rooms. The number of participants per room updates automatically for even distribution.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Optionally, make any edits to the rooms you want.
    • Expand each room to see who is assigned to it. By default, instructors and assistants are placed in the Main room. You can identify instructors and assistants by a label beside their name.
    • Shuffle who is in the rooms.
    • Add rooms.
    • Delete rooms.
  6. Select Open Rooms.

You have access to all of the same tools you had before. Recording is the only feature not available during breakout rooms.

How do I know what breakout room I’m in?

During breakout rooms, you’ll see the room name at the top of your People list. You can see who else is in the room with you from the list.

View All Breakout Rooms

You can view the activities of up to 4 rooms at once using the All Breakout Rooms view. If you have more than 4 breakout rooms, use the left and right arrow buttons to move through them.

After you start breakout rooms, a new All Breakout Rooms tab appears above the left hand panel area. Select it to see what is happening in all breakout rooms at once.

You can start a chat with each room or join a room from the All Breakout Rooms view. Point to a room and select the More Options ellipses button that appears. Select Open Chat or Join Room. Select the class tab to leave the All Breakout Rooms view.

Move Between Breakout Rooms

You can move yourself or someone else to another breakout room.

  1. Select Breakouts.
  2. Expand each room to see who is assigned to it.
  3. Select and drag the person you want to another room.
  4. Select Update Rooms.

You can also move between rooms from the All Breakout Rooms tab. Select the class tab to leave the All Breakout Rooms view.

End Breakout Rooms

  1. Select Breakouts.
  2. Select Close Rooms.

Breakout Room Chat

The chat panel shows chat rooms for each breakout room. Select a chat room to chat with that group.

Broadcast Message

Broadcast Message will allow you send important messages to all your breakout rooms at once.

  1. Click on the Breakouts tool at the top of your Class Navbar.
  2. From the breakout room settings menu click on the button at the top that titled Broadcast Message.
  3. Write your message and then click Send message.
  4. From students point of view, your message will appear on the top right corner of the screen.

How many breakout rooms can I have?

Class for Teams supports a maximum of 50 breakout rooms.
