Kaltura – How to download secondary footage

Kaltura Videos that have been recorded using either Kaltura Capture or FlexOS (Kaltura Lecture Capture) are uploaded into your My Media repository as duel-streamed videos. A Duel-streamed video is a Kaltura video that has to two different sources of footage: primary footage and secondary footage.

Behind the scenes these sources are actually two separate video files which play back together simultaneously, not a single stitched video file.  This architecture creates a few challenges when trying to download these types of videos from Kaltura. If you enable downloading for these videos you will quickly notice two problems: 1) You can only download the primary footage 2) The secondary footage is neither visible or accessible.

The following steps will show you how to recover the secondary footage so you can enable downloads for this source. However it should be stated that there are no mechanisms within Kaltura that will allow you edit both sources into one file. For this you will have to download both source files independently and then use external software like Adobe Premier to manually edit both footage files together. Alternatively if you do not have the time or expertise you can reach out to BCIT Media Works in the library or the Video Production Team over in the Learning and Teaching Center who can provide this service for you.

How to Access Secondary Footage

To access the secondary footage from a dual-streamed Kaltura video, start by going into your My Media repository. Next, click either the title or thumbnail of recorded entry

You will be taken to a new page with your video on full display. From this page click on the Actions button followed by the Edit option.

From the Edit page locate the grey area to the right of your video and copy the Media Entry ID:

Now return back to My Media and paste the copied Media Entry ID into the search bar and click on the magnifying class icon. This action will reveal both the primary and secondary footages that are associated with your video.

From here click on either the title or thumbnail of the secondary footage and then follow the same steps that you would when enabling downloads for Kaltura videos. This should allow you to download the secondary footage of your video.
