Overview of Manage Files
The Manage Files area is the backbone of your online course. Any file that is uploaded into your course such as images, html, pdf’s, word files, videos, etc. ultimately ends up here. Likewise if you create a file in the Content area of your course, what you are actually doing is creating a file here and linking it back to Content.
Files that end up missing or cannot be displayed properly in the Content area likely have to do with missing, unlinked or renamed files in Manage Files. Additionally, problems associated with slow loading times when trying to rollover courses often have to do with their being too many items inside your Manage Files
The following is a guide of best practices for maintaining the Manage Files area of your course
Access Manage Files
To begin click on Edit Course > Manage Files
Here you will see all of the files that have been uploaded into your course currently.
Creating Folders
Click create “New folder” to create a new folder inside your manage files. Generally it is good practice to name your folder something that identifies it as a group of files you want to place in there. For example you might wish to name the folder where you place all of your module 1 files “M1” so that it is easy to identify if a file from module 1 ever breaks in Contents
General Folder naming conventions are as follows:
- It must be 30 characters or less
- It should not contain spaces or special characters
- Sub-folders should not go more than 3 levels in otherwise you may start to see problems with rendering
Creating Files
Click on New File to create a new html file inside your Manage Files. Give it a name, create the contents and then click “Create”.
You can then add this file to the Contents of your course by clicking on the dropdown arrow of the newly created file, clicking “Add Content Topic“, then selecting the “Parent Module” and clicking “Add”
However the preferred way of creating is directly through the Content tool. Go to Content > Create a file. Give your file a title and populate its contents. After it has been created you can then come back into Manage Files and then move it into an appropriate folder
Moving a Folder/File (Cut and Paste)
To move files or folders from one area to the another first click on the checkbox next to the file or folder’s name and click on the “Cut” icon (scissors).
Now click into the Folder that you would like to place them into and then click on the “Paste” icon.
