How to Get Ready for Term Start

At the beginning of every term there is a lot to think about. It can be overwhelming remembering all the things you have to get ready before the course is live. Below is a list of reminders for each term start.

Course Rollover (Course Copy) - What is a Rollover?

Copying your course materials from one course CRN and Term to another CRN and Term.

You can re-use course material from a previous course by copying content to the new course offering.

*You must have access to both the previous course and the new course offering in order to copy these materials.

Crosslisting Your Courses - What is Crosslisting?

Crosslisting combines two or more courses together into one course to make it easier to teach multiple sections of students, the same material.

We will ask you for your Primary/Parent CRN – This is the course you plan to keep all content and students in (so everything gets moved to this CRN). You can only have 1 Primary/Parent CRN.

We will ask you for your Secondary/Child CRN(s) – These CRN’s are the courses you want crosslisted/combined with the Primary/Parent CRN. You can have as many as you like, but keep in mind that once crosslisted you will loose all content from the Secondary/Child CRN’s. Make sure prior to crosslising there are no

  • Quizzes (that you need, or have been completed by students)
  • Assignments (that you need, or have been completed by students)
  • Content (that you need)
  • Files

Essentially, if you have either content or information that is different from your Primary CRN and you need to keep it, then do not crosslist. Crosslisting is only a good idea if you plan to deliver the exact same content to all students at the same time.

Note: Please allow us up to ONE WEEK to perform this request.
Once completed, the following will be added to your title: (x-list 2023## (term)). Please do not delete this from the title.

Discussing Learning Hub Browser Support with Your Students

Browser support changes often, but the browsers that have consistently worked with Learning Hub are the following:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox

It’s always good practice to keep your web browser up to date, or you could have issues loading certain website/pages etc.

Using Personal Email to Connect with Students

Due to security/privacy issues, BCIT has a firewall in place that does not allow e-mails to come in to the Learning Hub (e-mail from external addresses). If you forward your Learning Hub e-mail to an external e-mail address, you will get messages being sent from within the Learning Hub, but any replies will be blocked and the receiver will never know you replied. It is strongly recommended you do NOT redirect your course e-mails.

Knowing Your CRN(s)

CRN stands for Course Reference Number. Each and every course has one. It’s a unique identifier for that course for that term.

It’s important to know that CRN’s can be recycled from term to term, so it’s important to also know your Terms. Examples of a CRN is as follows:

CHSC 5631 – Assayer Training Introduction CRN 86221
MRAD-0150 – Med Terminology for Imaging CRN 59879
